Your first step in the buying process is to ask yourself why you want to buy a home: To stop paying rent? To start building equity? To raise a family? To move up to a bigger house? To downsize? To rid yourself of exterior work like lawn maintenance and snow removal?

Next, where do you want to live? Consider area/community (north, south, east, or west side) and neighborhood (established or brand new; in a particular school zone; close to recreational facilities, transportation, daycare, library, stores, entertainment).

Think about home styles. 2 Storey, 1.5 storey, bungalow? How much space do you need? What rooms are non-negotiable (home office - den, formal dining room)? Do you want a home that is move-in ready or something to fix up and add your personal flare to? Consider how long you expect to live in this particular home. I will point out features in the home that will impact resale value.
